Play reading: “Doubt” John Patrick Shanley11:00Doubt: A Parable was written in 2004 and set in 1964. The play centres around a nun in a Bronx Catholic school, Sister Aloysius Beauvier, who accuses a priest, Father Brendan Flynn, of sexually abusing a schoolboy. The play has been called a drama, a morality play and thriller all in one. While the plot deals with the scandal of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, this is not the real subject of the play. As the author has pointed out, the play is a parable. The story is being used to illustrate the lesson is that there are dangerous consequences in being too certain about anything. You may find the attached preface to the play an interesting read. Reading of the first half will take place on Sunday March 16 and on the following Sunday, March 23, we will read the second half.
